In the Watchtower series Jesus Life and Ministry, the illustration for the story Plucking Grain on the Sabbath (WT 07/15/86 pp 8, 9) shows Jesus and his disciples 'walking through' the wheat fields. Rocky wrote a letter to the Society after the WT article was published in 1986 pointing out the farmer's point of view. A farmer would definitely raise objections to people walking through their ready to harvest wheat. So the illustration did not really show the point of the Pharisees accusations, that of working on the Sabbath. To our surprise, the illustration was changed. Compare the original illustration to that which was published in the book The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived Ó 1991, Story 31 . The illustration is essentially the same except that 'walking through' the fields now shows Jesus and his disciples walking on a pathway lined with a short stone wall. We don't know if it was Rocky's letter that effected that change but it did give us a period of time where we were lulled into believing someone really listened at WT. Amazing how they can change an illustration in a book on a seemingly minor point, but cannot change their policy on protecting children.

Guilt, the gift that keeps on giving
by sass_my_frass indarling mother asks me often 'so you're definitely going to all the meetings?
and you're not doing this just to get your family back, right?
you actually want to be a witness?

What to do? I have a life long rail pass already purchased on my mother's guilt trip train! Rocky said I should reverse shun her for telling our daughter not to talk to her DF'd dad and that she will continue to talk to me until the local congregation makes an announcement to formally DF me too. But it's so hard not to hop on that train when an 81-year old granny lays into you! I sure hope I don't do that to my kids!

For any of you who might be hesitant to take your story public, there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Rocky and I went public in our local paper (actually 2 county papers) with a letter to the editor. We have had nothing but positive feedback and support from our community (neighbors, business contacts, people we don't even know). Some of the comments from our community have been that of admiration for our courage, appreciation for bringing the problem of child molestation to the public's attention, commendation for standing up for the innocent, and sympathy for losing our family. We have been shunned by many of our JW family members for quite some time just for not going to meetings at the Kingdom Hall (seven years and counting). The rest of our JW family is now faced with choosing WT rules to shun or listening to their hearts and making a stand on this issue. We have nothing left to lose. Going public with our story gave the SilentLambs cause publicity. We have had no regrets. So don't be afraid! There are really good people out there in the world!

Yes, they can make an announcement at the KH that you are 'no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses.' Consequences of DA or DF are the same. What's really interesting is that they don't tell you an announcement has been made to the congregation. Rocky's announcement was made June 7. As far as I know, they have not made an announcement concerning me, but none of the elders has called to tell me I am married to a DF'd person. You'd think I might want to know? or that maybe they should DF me too?

Recycling: Not for True Christains
by jeanniebeanz inso, i'm sitting here sorting out my recycling since tomorrow is trash day, and i remembered something that happened years ago that gave me a chuckle.. it was a sunday botchtower study and the topic was things that we should be doing to prepare for life in the new system.
even as a child, i didn't answer from the magazine and they never knew just what i was going to say; they would usually not let me hold the mic myself just for that reason... .
i had been learning about recycling to preserve our natural resources in school (6th grade, i was 10) and had my comment ready to go:.

Try living in the middle of basically nowhere. There is no convenient way to dispose of waste as there is no municipal sanitary pickup. We compost kitchen waste, reuse glass, and take everything else to the recyling station that we cannot reuse. It is not particularly convenient. It definitely makes me consider my purchases when I have to find a way to dispose of packaging. I prefer glass over tin and by bulk when it is available.
I have no scientific/technical data to back my belief, but I do believe there is a shortage of places to dispose of garbage - no one wants a stinky garbage dump in their back yard.

When I was 16 I was asked to play piano for a friend's wedding at the KH. I borrowed a beautiful floral floor length dress from my sister. It was pastel colors, nothing bright, not something that would bring me a lot of attention. The neckline was a round scoop, rather low, but didn't show any cleavage, even tho I am rather well endowed. Some sister left me a note telling me that my attire was inappropriate, too revealing, etc., etc, etc. She didn't have the nerve to sign her name. I was a little surprised that my clothing was not appropriate - my father, Brother Perfect Elder, did not voice any objections to my choice of clothing. Hmmmmm....

Being a JW mother, I really don't understand how these women do it.
by Dragonlady76 inwhile reading through some threads, i sometimes wonder what my life would have been like if i had stayed a jw and had kids.
i now have a 23 month old son, that's very active, i can not begin to imagine what torture it would be for both of us to attend meetings or go out in field service.
i would be expected to keep him still the whole time without toys, snacks, books or any sort of distraction at all, except maybe the my book of bible stories.

We let our girls have notepads and pencils and of course, My Book of Bible Stories. We didn't care if they drew pictures or if they wrote stories, as long as they were quiet. They did really well, although they grew up being perfectionists! They have been very hard on themselves through school, including college. Both are Dean's list at their universities. We credit this to the pressure we had to teach them to behave as perfect as possible (this could be an entire topic along). When they were tiny we did some spanking through their double layer cloth diapers - made a lot of noise, probably scared them more than it hurt them physically - we are not proud of this. By the time they were 3-years old they were sitting still through most of those boring meetings. We looked forward to their wiggles and giggles at conventions tho. Gave us an excuse to get up and get our circulation going again! In retrospect, the only reason we looked forward to convention/assemblies was to see people from other congregations we hadn't seen since the last convention/assembly. The afternoon sessions were always a challenge for even the adults. We would get so sleepy! Poor little ones! they should have been tucked into their little beds for a nap and wake to milk and cookies and a trip to the park.

No Clapping at Wild Statements at DC????!!!!
by hamsterbait ini just read a post that said the audience was not obediently clapping at the convention when the speakers made wild statements (presumably with the rising nazi voice).
did anyone else notice this.. will others look out for it at their dc and tell us?.
i'm not going.. bwaaaaahhhhhhh.

Blondie, I believe that JWs don't clap after a speaker is announced because of the idea being promoted that the speaker is only a vessel of instruction and no special attention should be given to him. Once upon a time, way back when, the assembly and convention programs listed the names of the speakers and their home congregation. There were two reasons given to me why this was done: 1) naming the speakers was giving too much attention to the individual brothers (might go to their heads and swell their egos) 2) cost savings - the WTS could print a generic program with titles/time of the talk and use the same program for many convention sites. This switch was around the same time that united pure worship was being emphasized - wherever you go around the world, all the JWs were being taught the same thing, singing the same songs for the same WT studies, same talks given at all the conventions, no room for personalization or creativity. All of this information is not from official sources, just the song and dance given to me by brothers I knew working at the elite circuit/district level. Their mouths preached anti-self importance, but their behaviour reeked self-absorbed egotistically piety.
